After 12 years as designer for the company recognised as the innovators of “Off the Rack” wedding dresses in Australia, she started her own company, Wendy Makin Bridal Designs, in 1993 and has grown since then to become recognised as one of Australia's largest and best Bridal Wear manufacturers. Her labels are available through over 60 bridal boutiques in Australia as well as a growing export market in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Wendy Makin wedding dresses, both her Bridal Couture collection and Ready to Wear range, and her international Bella Donna Bridal Collection are recognised for their quality and fit. She achieves this by using only fabrics and laces from proven suppliers and stringent quality control checks throughout the manufacture of each wedding dress. This quality of manufacture and design has made her one of Australia's most awarded bridal dress designers. Among her award for design are 5 Australian Fashion Design Awards as well as 6 ABIA awards for service. Her last award though she considers her greatest achievement.

Recently she was named Australia’s number 1 couturier in the National ABIA poll. This award was voted by brides and Wendy considers this to be the pinnacle of her stellar career so far.
